U2 - The Best of 1980-1990 & B-Sides (1998)

Album Review:

U2's first compilation comprised two discs: the first entitled 'The Best of U2 Volume One 1980-1990' consisted of 14 tracks from the Boy to the Rattle and Hum era. The second, entitled 'The B-Sides', was a collection of 15 b-sides from the same era. The two discs were combined into a limited edition double release for the first week of sales. After the first week, the b-sides disc was deleted from the band's catalog.

In September of 1998 U2 announced they would be releasing the first of three "Best Of" compilations. This compilation would cover the recordings released between 1980 and 1990. A new recording of an old track would be released on this compilation and used for promotion of the compilation. The track chosen was 1987's The Sweetest Thing. It had originally been released as a b-side to the single Where the Streets Have No Name. The song was rerecorded, released as a single and on the a-sides disc of the Best of 1980 - 1990 compilation. The original version was released on the b-sides disc of the Best of 1980 - 1990 compilation.

This collection was released on November 3, 1998. This was a limited version of The Best of 1980 - 1990. This version was available for order for one week only, before being replaced with a single disc. It was the one disc version which was available for years, until 2002 when the double CD set was re-released in many countries.

All tracks have been digitally remastered from original master tapes where possible by Arnie Acosta at The Mastering Lab, Los Angeles.

The boy on the cover is Peter Rowan, brother of Bono's friend Guggi (real name Derek Rowan) of the Virgin Prunes. He also appears on the covers of the early EP Three, two of the band's first three albums (Boy, and War), and Early Demos.

October is actually a hidden track at the end of the album. After All I Want is You ends, there is a period of blank space and then October starts as part of the same track. October is not listed on the back tracklist of the CD.

14. A Room at the Heartbreak Hotel (Best of Edit) (4:32)
15. Trash, Trampoline and the Party Girl (2:33)

Some notes on the differences between tracks:

Bad: This is an edit of the version found on The Unforgettable Fire. This version drops several "Whooo hooo hoos" found in the original version.

Where the Streets Have No Name: This is an edit of the 5:37 version found on the Joshua Tree album. This is not the same as the version found on the single which is 4:46 in length and features additional backing vocals by the Edge.

When Love Comes to Town: This version of the song features an extra guitar lick you can hear at about 4:12 in the Best Of version. This takes the total time of the track on this release to 4:17 from 4:15 which it was on Rattle and Hum.

The Three Sunrises: This version is a little longer than the version found on the Unforgettable Fire single, and appears to be due to a slightly longer fade-in to the song.

Bass Trap: This is a large edit of the version on the Unforgettable Fire single which was (5:13) in length.

Hallelujah Here She Comes: This is an edit of the version found on the Desire single which was (4:12) in length.

A Room at the Heartbreak Hotel: Yet another edit. The original from the Angel of Harlem single was (5:30) and ended with more "hallelujah's".
